Monetary Trends - Apr 09: Unbalanced liquidity stifled credit creation - by Indonesia Research
Monetary conditions remained stable in April. Growth of M1 and M2 eased to 8.9% yoy and 18.4% yoy respectively amid improving domestic liquidity conditions. Cautious bank lending slowed down loan growth to 22.2% yoy in April from 26.8% in March. Deposit growth was higher at 20.2% yoy on price wars for deposit placements. However, the problem of unbalanced liquidity among banks remained. To enhance credit creation, the government should consider providing guarantees to inter-bank transactions or the pooling of funds among banks so as to redistribute funds from surplus holders to deficit holders.
